The wellington

The Wellington opened in December 2004, realising a 10 year dream for landlord Nigel Barker. Having moved to Birmingham from Derby to run the Barton's Arms at Aston Nige was frustrated with the lack of availability and choice of real ales in the city centre and vowed, one day to open a real ale free house.

It took some time but with the backing of Black Country Traditional Inns the Welly opened a week before Christmas 2004 with 10 hand pulls and a queue on the doorstep! It was an immediate success, so much so that within 6 months the bar had to be extended and another 6 hand pulls installed. In the first year the pub sold an unprecedented 2610 different ales.

Due to the continued success, in 2014 the Welly, which had previously only occupied the ground floor and cellar of the building, acquired the former offices on the two floors above. A major refurbishment took place and in June of that year the pub re-opened with 27 hand pulls, an upstairs bar, function room and roof terrace. At the Wellington our main mission is to sell a large range of interesting, well kept real ales. We do, however, also have a range of quality lagers and ciders along with foreign bottled beers. Our range of Scotch whiskies on the ground floor is amazing whilst the first floor bar has a huge range of whiskies from around the world. We have recently introduced a range of speciality gins and rums.

We don't sell food at the Welly but you are more than welcome to bring your own or order a takeaway curry, pizza or indeed anything to be delivered to the pub. We provide plates, cutlery and condiments.Do come and try our unique, music and fruit machine-free atmosphere. Unfortunately we only cater for over eighteens. The pub is situated in the heart of the business district and is less than 5 minutes walk from both New Street and Snow Hill Stations.

Food

We always have a ready supply of Fairfields Farm crisps, proper Black Country pork scratchings, peanuts, Snyders pretzel pieces, Mini Cheddars, Twiglets and, of course, Scampi Fries.Central to Wellington philosophy is our lack of a kitchen, leaving us free to concentrate on what we do best: serving quality beer. Instead, we provide plates, cutlery and condiments, leaving you free to bring your own food in or order a takeaway directly to the pub.Below are some of our favourite Birmingham takeaways. They are all within spitting distance of the Wellington, or will deliver right to your table.

Q Functions and Bookings

Whether it be work drinks, a birthday party, a group meeting or pretty much anything else, the Wellington has the facilities and the atmosphere to make your night a success.
We have two rooms available for hire. The Function Room is on the First Floor adjacent the bar and has a coal fire, a 50 inch LED TV and access to our beautiful roof terrace, and can comfortably hold 25 people.
The Meeting Room is on the Second Floor and has a 60 inch TV, basic kitchen facilities (sink, kettle) and can comfortably hold 30 people.
We are able to supply a bluetooth-connectable sound system for music needs and cutlery and crockery for your food. We recommend Pickles of Harborne for a tasty spread.

Q Cost of Service

Arriving at 11.30am, I plumped for Black Country Ales’ Pig On The Wall (4.3 per cent) because it costs just £1.10 for a half pint (and £2.20 for a pint) before 1pm.

Given the meagre ingredients, it seemed like an expensive choice at £3.95.

But at least the bread was good and an ill-explained meal deal meant that my £1.95 fruit crumble with custard dessert surprisingly discounted the total price back down to £3.95.

Each beer is dispensed in a two pint container so prices vary from around £7.40 to £9.

Minimum spends are £10 and there’s also a delivery charge of £2.50.
