Manchester shopping park and museum work together to offer celebrations this Autumn
A Manchester-based shopping park is working with a local museum to celebrate two important dates in the Jewish calendar this Autumn and visitors will be able to join in on the celebrations for free. For the upcoming celebrations of Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot, Manchester Fort Shopping Park, based on Cheetham Hill Road, has linked up with Manchester Jewish Museum to put two event dates together to raise awareness about the important cultural celebrations for the diverse community in the local area. The events are being planned by both parties, with a number of retail stores and local organisations also working to make the events a reality. Derek Askew, Centre Manager of Manchester Fort said, “We have always wanted to put on something extra special around this time of the year to highlight culturally-significant events to our visitors at Manchester Fort. “I became Centre Manager of this shopping park more than 18 months ago and the diverse range of visitors we see visiting us every day has always been fantastic. We are in one of the most densely multicultural areas of the UK and it is definitely something that should be celebrated.” Manchester Fort, based conveniently just half a mile outside of Manchester City Centre, welcomes over 5 million visitors every year. The shopping park boasts over 35 stores including the only Nike Outlet in Greater Manchester, Party Delight’s flagship store & TK Maxx, as well as more than 1,200 free parking spaces and easy access. To celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the two parties will be hosting an event on Sunday 17th September, at Manchester Jewish Museum – just a stone’s throw away from the shopping park on Cheetham Hill. The event will highlight the traditions associated with the new year celebration. Visitors will be able to enjoy a local Klezmer band, sweet traditional food and a number of craft activities. The fun doesn’t end here however, as two weeks later both parties will be unveiling a full-sized Sukkah to celebrate Sukkot on 1st October. With the generous donations made by B&Q and Marks & Spencer at Manchester Fort, visitors will be able to learn about the importance of building a Sukkah for this time of the year. Gareth Redston, Learning Manager at Manchester Jewish Museum added, “We are really excited to be working with our neighbours at Manchester Fort to celebrate the most important time in the Jewish year. The support shown by everyone at Manchester Fort will mean that together we can put on two fantastic events that will attract the many diverse communities of our local area and help bring people closer together.” Manchester Jewish Museum tells the stories of Jewish Manchester and is located in a magnificent Grade II* former synagogue. Located in one of the most diverse communities in the UK, Manchester Jewish Museum is a museum for everyone, regardless of faith, age or background. MJM is currently engaged in a major development programme to expand the museum, preserve the historic synagogue and diversify its audiences.
