beside an Afghan solider

Well to start I was a United states Marine. During my 2nd deployment I didn't do much of an infantryman's job. Due to our plan of letting the afghan army and police take more control I was my company commander's scribe. At shurrahs I would sit beside him and our interpreter and wrote about everything that would go on to later send the report up to higher. We did many meetings with the District Governor and I learned much about the customs and culture of Afghanistan. I remember one shurrah we went to the DG, commanders of Afghan forces and many elders were present. We all met at the one elders house and the shurrah was AMAZING! I have never ate so much good food before. At first I didn't want to seem like some "fat american" (I am only 140 pounds) I sat beside an Afghan solider who kept telling me about the food. Now my pashto is not that good so most was hand gestures. I can't begin to explain how amazing naan is. Also I used to hate tomatoes but they had chopped tomatoes and onions together that you would eat with the rice, pretty much the best thing I have ever ate. I ate goat and chicken which both were so amazing! I hope one day I can find a Afghan restaurant or learn how to cook the amazing food I ate. I would suggest to any American to try it because it is so amazing!

Bro, nothing will beat the side-street boolani I had last year in Kabul. It was around chasht, 20 afghanis for two pieces and it was absolutely delicious (weather may have helped...cold weather+hot food). 🙂Shoola is also very yummy during winter, with quroot

I am glad to hear you enjoyed the food 🙂Maybe it had to do with the meat being halal? (Which means slaughtered according to Islamic law). Kind of like kosher but for muslims.I have had many non muslim classmates tell me how different halal meat tastedRegardless, thank you for sharing your nice experience

I think that may have been the case. It was the best meal I have had in my life I know that 🙂
